If you're on our mailing list, you'd probably have received this in your mail by now but if not... Hello and greetings in the New Year! :)

Thanks to all who came by our little booth at OC during the Christmas month and although it was really tiring, it was a good learning experience and I'm glad to have been given the opportunity to participate in the Christmas Fair! It was great to meet with all of you and thank you for making the experience a memorable one!

We'll be taking a short break in the month of January to rest as well as to design new pieces for you ladies. If things go as planned, we'll be launching a new collection by the end of the month!

We're also working on creating our very own lookbook for our website during this period. Please help us by sending in pictures of yourselves with our jewellery, together with a quote or thought you have about our pieces, to our email at serenitedesigns [at] gmail.com. We will compile the pictures and include them on our website! :) And as a way of expressing our thanks for your contributions, we will be giving two ladies a $10 voucher each for our jewellery! To qualify for the giveaway, all you need to do is to send in your pictures by the 21st of January and we will conduct a draw. :)

A very long December...

It's the first time in 3 weeks that I'm back at my table with my laptop. Previously, my laptop (together with me) was all over the place. Once my exam ended on the 26th Nov, I had a week to stock up on new pieces before heading off to a youth camp! Nope, wasn't attending it as a youth (too old for that, hehe) but my husband was running the camp so was there to help some. It was last week and I think we slept a total of less than 20 hours the entire week. I remember having to wake up at 645am every morning to make milo for the youths and we never slept earlier than 3am every night. However, it was a good camp. Thank God for seeing us through it. I hope the youths enjoyed themselves and learned precious lessons!

Now that I'm back, I face a slightly embarrassing problem. I'm running out of stock to sell at the Christmas Fair and I'm finding it hard to make more as I'm exhausted. My fingers just won't move. I've been having to drag myself out of bed the past couple of days and I think I need to sleep more but I don't have the time.

I'm getting a little moody being stuck at my booth for 10 hours each day as well. And I realised that age is catching up on me these days. I used to turn to a cup of ice-blended coffee or cold bubble tea for comfort whenever I felt tired but today, I wanted a cup of hot drink. And I'm not a hot drinks sort of person.

But anyhows, finishing well is important and I won't allow myself to end the Christmas fair with a table full of empty necklace busters. This weekend is our last weekend at Orchard Central for this year. I promise our table will be full when you come down. Do hope to see you there - I'm off to make more pieces for the rest of the week! Till then, take care! :)

Orchard Central's Christmas Fair 19th Nov - 19th Dec

Hi everyone! We'll be at Orchard Central's (yes, OC again!) Christmas Fair from the 19th November to 19th December. Actually, I've been there since last Friday but it's been a really crazy week so I haven't had time to do much updates. We will be there from 11am to 9pm daily. (Yes, even on weekdays!) Update: We're now located outside EWF on Level One! We'll be right in front of the escalators so it'll be hard to miss! :)

A bittersweet parting with Open Doors

This week was the last Open Doors for the year. I have mixed feelings within me - I'm really glad to have been given the privilege of being a part of Open doors since July. It has really helped me to grow Serenité Designs in many ways, as well as taught me how to manage my business and time a little better. We were also featured in the Chinese papers sometime in August (thanks to the wonderful editor, J, who dropped by) and I've also met many many many amazing and supportive customers! And I know this may sound cliché and cheesy, but it does make me really happy when people are appreciative of our designs. :) And not forgetting the organizers behind Open Doors who worked really hard every weekend in making sure the event ran smoothly. I'll definitely miss some of the vendors who are there as well but I'm sure I'll be seeing them around at the different bazaars and fairs!

I guess I'm glad that Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber won't be blasted into my ears anymore for the next couple of weekends. :P I know it may sound funny, but when the same songs are played continuously to you for 16 hours on the weekends, they somehow stay stuck in your head even throughout the week. My husband, who has been so kind in accompanying me at OC the past months, suffers from the same syndrome. Sometimes, we subconsciously find ourselves humming to the tune of 'Poker face' and when realization strikes, we get really embarrassed and ask ourselves, "What was that man?!"

But yes, I guess I wanted to say that I truly had a wonderful time of learning and growing at Open Doors and who knows? Maybe we'll be back next year! :)

I'm going to leave you guys with some pictures of our table display on Sunday. It's a little different from the usual and I added in a new prop to hold the rings, studs and clips. Hope you like it!

Back from Open Doors!

It's amazing how fast the body adapts to changes. I took a break from doing weekend bazaars for a mere two weeks and now that I started again, I'm exhausted and down with a cold. And it's only the first week that I'm back! But anyway, our location last week was against a backdrop of a painting of the Med Sea and you can spot my sister and husband in the picture, totally unaware that I've taken a picture. :) I've been thinking of coming up with a new set up as well as this current one is getting boring. Perhaps we'll have something new up this week.

Each time I attend a bazaar or fair, I'm really amazed by the people who are there. As sellers, whenever there's little pockets of time, we sometimes chat with each other and find out more about what the other party is doing. And I must say I'm really inspired and encouraged by some of these stories that I hear. In Singapore, it's quite a big and risky step to start up your own little business as the standard of living here is costly but I can see how there are many out there persevering on and working really hard. Quite motivating, especially during tough times of slow sales.

I foresee the rest of the year to be really hectic. 3 more phonics classes to go, an exam (my last one!) in less than 2 weeks, weekly meetings to plan for a week-long youth camp at the start of December and a couple of fairs and bazaars to attend all within the next 7 weeks. It'll be interesting to see how it all turns out. Till then! :)

Unveiling something new...

Sorry for the silence the past couple of weeks. This is probably old news but running a business is definitely not easy! There's so much to be be done but so little time for everything; designing new pieces, setting aside time to put new ideas together (sometimes a new design can take an entire day to create), photo-taking and editing, uploading it into the online shop, come up with names and descriptions for the jewellery, marketing, networking, selling, packing, think of ways to improve, expand etc...

And there's also the elusive website that I'm always talking about when customers I meet at Open Doors ask if I sell anywhere else. But thankfully, my husband was able to create and design one for me! Took us a while to configure and settle the minor details but yay, it's finally up! I have been dutifully uploading some of my jewellery the past couple of days and there are some new designs that are already online ready for purchasing. I will continue to upload the rest of the jewellery over the next couple of weeks so do check back!

Baby names...

I spent a good time this evening looking at websites with suggestions for baby names. But before you think it's for me... hold on a second! Well... it is for my purpose to a certain extent but not what you think it's for.

I have decided to give names to my jewellery designs for the sake of my website that I'm taking forever to launch. I used to give names to all the pieces that I make but in all honesty, that's something that I don't really like doing. For me to name my designs, the name has to feel and sound right. It can't be anything random but needs to suit the personality and appearance of the jewellery. Previously, I wasted so much time researching and thinking of what name to give to my earrings/necklace/ring that I gave up after a while and stuck to descriptions like "Hand-wired bird nest pendants in turquoise blue".

This arrangement worked especially well for me since I've been at fairs and bazaars the past couple of months and didn't have to bother naming my jewellery. But when it comes to the website... I realised it doesn't make sense to type long title descriptions (gets very wordy) and so... I've gone back to naming them for easier reference.

Thankfully, I've settled on names for almost every piece except for one or two. And yes... that means our online shop is almost ready (finally)! Watch this space for more details on its launch! :)

This week at Open Doors, we'll be located at Basement 2 of Orchard Central. It's a really beautiful and cozy place done up Mediterranean style and it's called 'The Med'. Open Doors is also giving out goodie bags to the first 100 shoppers per day so do come early to grab your goodie bag! :)

On our part, we're also having a special promotion just for this weekend; purchase any necklace this weekend and get a second necklace at 40% off! Post Open Doors - 18 & 19 September

Oops, I realised I forgot to post a preview for Open Doors last weekend! But anyway, here are two vintage-inspired statement necklaces that were newly created just last week. :)

I'm really glad that I got a mannequin because it makes photo-taking for these necklaces so much easier now. However, I also tried taking some pictures using my mini light box for purpose of cataloging these necklaces in a way that is more... professional? Studio-like?

What do you think? I haven't adjusted the colour though, so it looks a little strange, hehe. But anyway, I'm really glad that these necklaces caught the eye of so many ladies! And they looked really good when they tried it on too! :) Currently, only the purple one on the right is available as the rosewood white pearl is reserved.

One of my favourite one-of-a-kind vintage necklaces got sold this weekend too! I was really happy but felt a tinge of sadness as well. Even my husband felt like something was missing after the necklace was sold; he really liked that one! Here it is!

I never did managed to take a proper photo of it and these impromptu pictures taken at the bazaar just don't do it justice. The focal part of the necklace was created with a vintage brooch from the 50s as well as a matching earring from the 60s. Both were in perfect condition and I thought I'd glam it up with some lovely faceted onyx-black Czech glass beads. I'm glad it went to a really sweet lady from Thailand who really liked it! I didn't manage to get a picture of her wearing it but she looked stunning with it. I can imagine how the wearer of this necklace would steal the limelight at any formal or cocktail event!

And before I forget, I really had a wonderful time meeting some of my mailing list members at Open Doors! I really appreciate when you guys just drop by to say hi or to check out new designs! Thank you so much for coming by! :) And I had a nice surprise when a friend came to visit too! Familiar faces always help to brighten the day... :)

Some pictures from 'Shop@The British Club' Fair!

Just a little update with pictures from 'Shop@The British Club' Fair on Wednesday...

It's my first time at a club/hotel fair and it was a really interesting experience in more ways than one. Been a while since I worked with a 3x3 table and I thought I'd come up with a new set up! Couldn't really display everything though so only laid the necklaces and rings out. Loved the diverse culture the different vendors brought to the fair as well! Met many lovely people and coincidentally, I was next to a really nice lady who was selling handmade items too! She designs and hand prints her own cloth and converts it into pillow cases and pouches! Her style is really colourful and vibrant. I was initially shocked when I found out she hand prints them because they looked really amazing.

I also really liked where we were situated; the room we were in had windows and we were surrounded by the forests and lots of greenery. I was quite taken aback by the view when I was first setting up and you can see a little of it in the above picture. It was really soothing to look out of the window and see green!

Anyway, for this weekend, we'll be back at Orchard Central! Previews to come soon! :)

A mid week update...

And so, I've conquered my assignment and am happy making jewellery again. :) This week has been productive - got my supplies and made many many new pieces till I've lost count - pictures to come soon. I also got a mannequin! Have been thinking of getting one for ages but it was always out of my budget... However, I saw one going for half the usual price at Oddjects and I decided to get it! Although it's not the colour I was initially planning to get, I figured it could still be used for photo-taking purposes. (Was hoping to get a vintage-looking beige one)

Here it is! I think this colour works well too! Can't see it in this picture but there are lovely lace trims at the side which is really cute. :) And if I ever go into apparel, it will come in handy too!

I wanted to post a picture of a lovely lovely lady, JJ, who has been really kind in agreeing to 'model' for my products. This is the second time she came back and she bought a rose necklace and Paris glass pendant.

I think she looks fantastic in these shots. Makes me want to make one rose necklace in the same colour for myself. :P Thank you, JJ, for these pictures! :)

I know that I really love making jewellery when...

... my school assignment is due in two days and all I can think about is making more vintage statement pieces. Each time my submission date approaches, strange symptoms befall me and I complain of headaches, chills, puffy eyes, nausea and I get terribly lethargic. Strangely, I will also end up spending most of my day in bed thinking that napping will help me feel better or cure me of this strange illness. It took my husband half a year (since we were married only half a year ago) to realise that this strange phenomena has been consistently occurring five days before my submission date(s). Yes, I only start work on my essays five days before. :\ But if I start any earlier, I would be in this state of languor for much longer. He says it's all in my mind, and I agree that my procrastination and adverseness towards my assignments have been showing itself in physical symptoms. But it's my last module (hooray!) and finishing well is important too...

So please bear with me if I'm a little quiet on updates for the next couple of days as I work on my assignment. Truth is, I'm extremely excited because I've been receiving my new supplies in bits and pieces since the start of this week. Took them eons to arrive! Here's a sneak of some beautiful vintage jewellery from the 50-60s that I got from an estate sale -

Aren't the flowers gorgeous? Already, ideas are bursting in my head. I think there's nothing more splendid than wearing a unique handcrafted piece of statement jewellery with history to it. It's like carrying a beautiful antique around but just that you wear it on your neck, or ears or wrist. :)

Okay, I better stop blabbering now. I'm amazed too at how much I can type here in such a short span of time as compared to working on my school assignment. For the time taken to write this post, I probably could only have typed out 3-5 lines' worth of answers, hehe.

Will be off to work on my essay now and some updates will be in store when I'm done with my school work!

Once again, thanks for all your support at Open Doors and Starhub Green this week! I need to do some serious replenishing of my inventory - a good thing - and that means that I would need to spend much more time this week creating new pieces.

The good news is that there are some ideas that have been brewing in the creative sphere of my brain and that my recently acquired lots of vintage jewellery are on their way to me! So we can look forward to more vintage flowery goodness soon! The only challenge is if the new pieces can be completed for the weekend but good things are worth waiting for right? ;)

As for today, I'm just going to sit back, take a break and recover from the past week before I start working on new ideas and custom orders. And perhaps, do some much needed packing in my crafting corner before the creative mess starts it's cycle all over again.

This is way overdue but it's better late than never. Firstly, apologies for my lack of promised updates on the blog and mailing list - I signed up for a bazaar at Starhub Green and was yesterday and today and I didn't realized how crazy it would be to do seven bazaars in a week or so! Thus, in the midst of making more flowery goodies and preparing for bazaars, I haven't been able to spend much time on my computer!

So without further ado, our winner for the National Day Draw is...

The lovely Janice whom I managed to get a picture of and I think she looks wonderful! She kindly obliged with a picture as she purchased a one-of-a-kind vintage collage necklace. I didn't get a proper picture of it as I completed it on one of the mornings at Open Doors and I'm glad to have this picture of the necklace with its new owner! A preview for Open Doors 7th-9th August!

This week's Open Doors is a little more special than usual for reasons more than one. First reason is that instead of the usual two day event, Open Doors this week will stretch for three days till Monday, a public holiday, as it's Singapore's birthday! Secondly, as it's National Day, the theme of the weekend market is 'Glocal Local' and there will be nostalgic things from our past such as kachang puteh and potong ice-cream at the event. Thirdly, in light of our country's 45th birthday, we'll be having our own mini celebration as well and more details will be revealed at the end of the post ;)

If you like floral and vintage things, you will be in for a treat this week! I've been busy working on re-purposing vintage earrings and pieces into necklaces and most of these pieces are one-of-a-kind - meaning that no one else in the street will have it. Here's a preview of some of these necklaces that will be up for sale:

Our promotion this week will be in the form of a mini give-away or lucky draw as it's more commonly known here. As it's our country's 45th birthday, every $45 that you spend will entitle you to an opportunity to win a $45 voucher from our shop! Just a short mid-week update

Once again, thanks to all who came down to Open Doors last weekend! Although it can be very tiring staying out the entire day for 10 hours tending the booth, what makes it enjoyable is being able to chat with people who come by. I've also noticed that the crowd is different every week and it makes each experience at Open Doors a unique one for me!

Last week, I had significantly more male customers! Initially, I found it strange since there wasn't any event like Valentine's Day coming up but I thought it was really really sweet of these guys to get gifts for their significant other or mums/sisters. There was also a lady with a super-uber cute baby with the most adorable eyes and cheeks ever!

As I was right in front of the stage last weekend, I had full view of the events that were happening on both days. It was a good thing because we were really entertained but the downsides to it were bleeding ears and a throbbing heart. Unfortunately, the speakers were blasting right at us... from behind and in the front. It got so bad at one point during the dance competition that the vibration from the speakers caused my lighter accessories to do their own little dance on my table as well and my mirror bounced it's way off the dresser. Thankfully, it didn't break as the fall off the dresser was short. Let's hope that this week, I'll be somewhere out of the range of the speakers and I need to apologize to customers with whom I had to use hand gestures as a form of communication during those loud moments.

This coming long weekend, we'll be at Open Doors for three days as Monday is National Day! There will be a new promotion to celebrate our nation's birthday, as well as new designs! Preview pictures to come soon. :) Coming up is also a short post on basic care and maintenance for your jewelry pieces!

An amazing first at Open Doors

I had a blast at Open Doors the past weekend and that would not have been possible without the support of the many lovely ladies and a few gentlemen! I'm really glad that everyone appreciated the handmade pieces and liked the designs!

Other factors that contributed to the amazing experience also included the various competitions that were going on throughout the afternoon. On Saturday, there was an event to see who could say 'Yakun Kaya Toaaaaaasssstt..." for the longest period of time and my sister and I laughed so hard till we teared. The participants were wonderful at being good sports and the winner really gave his all; his squeaky scream towards the end proved it. There was also the Ben & Jerry's ice-cream eating competition which tempted the participation of the both of us! But the call of duty in tending the booth held us back, hehe.

At this week's Open Doors (31st July and 1st August), we'll be having new designs as well as new promotions! I'll post a preview of the new pieces tomorrow and if you liked what you saw last week, I'm sure you will like what we're going to have this week! :) Also, if you are on the mailing list, be sure to look out for an email with a special discount just for mailing list members only!

The shop layout which took me 2 hours to set up. First time since attending bazaars that I had a long table! I'm more familiar with square spaces but I think I prefer long tables as I've more space to display the products!

Melissa, a lovely customer who bought one of my favorite necklaces! It was made with a vintage Coro floral earring re-purposed into a long necklace and I'm glad that it went to someone who is going to love it. Through chatting with her, I also found out that Melissa is an image consultant and you can check out her blog too!

Ok, this is running a little late but Friday came so fast and I only realised 2 hours ago while I was out that I have yet to finish a couple of things for tomorrow! And one of which is to announce the promotion for tomorrow's event!

So here goes... I will be having a promotion at Open Doors this weekend! The first 5 customers with minimum purchase of $25 for each day will get a free pair of floral ear studs! So in total, there are 10 pair or earrings to be given away, 5 on each day! :)

Another bazaar! And some Korean drama...

If you've been following our online shop, I have indeed been guilty of not updating any new products since the last bazaar. I'll be honest and say that I struggle with product photography and listing - something which I need to overcome though if I want to sell online in the long run. However, I've been busy trying to look for more bazaars to attend as well as making more products for future bazaars!

And guess what... I'll be bringing my entire collection down to Open Doors, weekend market at Orchard Central this weekend! And if things go well, I will be there every weekend! :) Orchard Central is the building next to 313@Somerset and it's opposite Central Point as well so it's hard to miss. The weekend market will be located on level one too. This bazaar is really interesting and quite different from the rest that I've checked out; the last time I went to take a look, they had a couple of local bands and singers performing on a mini stage, blogshops selling brand new clothes, homemade ice cream booths, interesting homeware, batik painting and other unique little knick knacks. They also had a specialized beer booth to celebrate the World Cup!

I'll post more information about the weekend market in a day or two as well as more information about an upcoming promotion! :)

My routine these few weeks have been quite a... routine. I wake up, check my emails, reply convos or pack orders if needed and then head out to the post office and grab lunch on the way. I then spend the rest of day making new pieces of jewelry and it usually continues into the evening. I've realised it's quite monotonous sitting in front of my laptop wiring beads together the entire day and so, I decided to try and follow a tv drama online.

I don't usually watch Korean dramas and have sworn off any of it when I heard of how many people get addicted and watch it through the nights. The sad love stories also don't appeal to me much as I wouldn't want to cry and make my jewelry wet while making them. However, I've been watching bits and pieces of a particular Korean drama on the television and it's nothing like the sappy love story I thought it would be! In fact, it's drama, action, thriller and of course, romance all in one and I got to admit that I was hooked. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies (with Raisins)

Remember the baking itch I had a couple of posts back? I found a recipe online over at Baking Bites and it looked really promising. Plus, the reviews were great too and nothing beats having a picture of the end product so you know if you're on the right track after the first batch.

I followed the recipe exactly with only one change. Personally, oatmeal cookies aren't complete without raisins. Thus, instead of 2.5 cups of rolled oats, I used 2 cups of rolled oats and added in half a cup of raisins.

They were really easy to make and tasted fantastic as promised. I brought them to a camp and the youths finished it up really quick! Just remember to space them out if you ever try the recipe as they do spread quite a bit. Enjoy! :)

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
(as cited on Baking Bites)

1 cup butter, room temperature

1 cup sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 large eggs

2 tbsp milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

2 1/2 cups oats (rolled or “quick,” but not “instant”)

2 cups chocolate chips (about 12-oz.)

1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and the sugars until mixture is light in color. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the milk and the vanilla extract.
3. In a medium bowl, stir together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Either by hand or with the mixer on low speed, gradually beat the flour in to the sugar mixture until just incorporated.
4. Stir in the oats and chocolate chips by hand.
5. Drop 1-inch balls of dough onto the cookie sheet, placing about 1 1/2 inches apart so they have room to spread.
6. Bake at 350F for 10-13 minutes, until golden brown at the edges and light golden at the center.
7. Cool on baking sheet for at least 1-2 minutes before transfering to a wire rack to cool completely.

Makes 4 dozen.

* You may choose to substitute either the chocolate chips or oats with raisins depending on your preference.

Trendspotting Updates

I'm back from Trendspotting @ Supperclub! I've forgotten how tiring bazaars/fleas can be since this is only my second one six months after the first at MAAD. And I think my age is catching up with me; it takes absolutely longer to recover from a whole day event as compared to a couple of years back.

I was a little apprehensive at Trendspotting, because I realized that I was at a flea market as compared to a bazaar. I never really knew the difference between both but my neighbour kindly pointed out that fleas are mostly where you get pre-loved items at great prices and bazaars are more for brand new items. And so, with the new information registered in my mind, I wondered if I had come to the "right" place with my handmade items.

Futhermore, I was situated on Level 2 and the windows were tinted red. Honestly, I was a little disappointed as I had emailed earlier to check if the lighting would be normal white light after seeing pictures of the club online (saw that Level 2 was really really red). And I had assurance that the lighting would be white. Unfortunately, the spotlights couldn't neutralise the red tint and the blinds couldn't be brought down to cover the tinted windows and for the entire afternoon, this is what my stall looked like...

The photo above was taken with normal settings and it's not been edited. And this below, is the same picture after being edited with my very mediocre photoshop editing skills (actually, I just hit the auto correction button in photoshop...)...

Feels like two different dimensions yeah? After the first 15 minutes, I couldn't remember what the color of my accessories were anymore as everything was washed out by the red tint and I started to feel a little colour blind. Thankfully, there was a corridor fitted with white fluorescent lights very nearby and I could hop over now and then with customers who wanted to see the accessories in better lighting. Fortunately by 5-ish to 6pm or so, the red tinted windows lost their effect and the lighting got a little better and the accessories could be seen closer to their original color.

Despite the lighting issues, I had a great time at the event and I'm really glad to have met new people who are into vintage floral jewelry as well! Our table also won 2nd prize for the best decorated table! :D

And last but not least, if you dropped by our stall on Saturday, thank you so much for coming and for your support! :) We might be going for another bazaar/flea in the month of July but that is still in the works, will send out more information once that has been confirmed!

Elmo Cupcakes and Trendspotting

Ok, remember the dubious elmo cupcakes I made a few months back? That was actually for a friend celebrating her baby's 1 year old birthday. I thought I shouldn't leave you guys with those horrific first-try pics and show you what the end product turned out to be. This was after 4 tries and I'm so glad it looks like elmo! The fur was made from fresh coconut gratings with red food dye, eys were from marshmallows, nose was from a box of orange mentos and the pupils and mouth... melted dark chocolate which was re cut when it was harden.

I decided after that I wouldn't bake for a very long time anymore after baking 60 of those elmo cupcakes. However, recently, I'm started to feel the baking itch again and I feel like some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies... But we'll see how that goes...

On another note, I will finally be at a bazaar again next coming Saturday! My first was at MAAD last Dec and since after, I either couldn't find good bazaars for handmade stuff or simply didn't have the time due to schoolwork. But exams are over now and I'd better make use of this freedom before the semester starts again.

The bazaar I'll be at is called Trendspotting and it will be held at Supperclub at North Bridge Road. I've been given a table on the 2nd floor near the bar. I've never heard of Supperclub so I did a little research and was shocked to find pictures of beds. Well, it seems like it's an upmarket stylish restaurant/club and the beds serve as dining seats/tables for people to lounge on while having dinner. Here's more information below...

Baking and Jewelry Crafting

Sometimes, baking and jewelry crafting feels very much the same; when at first you don't succeed, try again. This week has been pretty frustrating... Ruined cakes and countless attempts (>5) in stringing a pearl necklace. But at last, after countless tries, I've managed to get a good eggless sponge cake as well as a beautiful double strand pearl necklace.

Jewelry aside for the moment, I do need to work on the decoration icing that will be on the cake... Besides the wrong colored fur (the red coloring doesn't work, it's pink!) and slightly deranged looking eyes and mouths due to a wrong miscalculated step, if you are able to guess who/what this character is, I would say it is quite a success for a first attempt! :P

If you do have any tips or suggestions on how to get a good red colored buttercream icing and to make good eyes and mouths, I would really appreciate your help!

I'm finally back after the wedding, moving and unpacking! Have also managed to get most of my jewelry stuff sorted out and I can finally get back to work. ;)

It was a little hard to get my creative juices flowing after leaving my pliers untouched for so long. Thus, I decided to stick with more familiar pieces and just played around with the colors. Hope you like the color combination of these new pieces! My favorite would be the Daffodil Necklace on the top right!

Back from December's MAAD

Thanks everyone, for your wonderful support at this month's MAAD! It's my first time at MAAD with my collection of handmade jewelry and I'm really encouraged by the support shown for handmade products!

I was really restless the night before the bazaar and kept trying to think if I had forgotten to bring anything. And true enough, being the forgetful person that I am, I left a box of rings as well as some necklace stands out of my packing list! But thank God that everything went well still and I really enjoyed my time at the bazaar. My talented and lovely neighbor Jane (check out her lovely bags!) has been such a great help and company to me the past 2 days. And I've also enjoyed chatting with my customers and getting to know some of you guys a little better! I would love to keep in touch so do feel free to drop me an email anytime! :)

Other than working on a few custom orders from the bazaar, I'll be taking a short break from jewelry making this month as I prepare for my wedding in January. And because Linus and myself are both independent designers of our own kind, a lot of our wedding stuff are handmade too! And a lot of handmade stuff = a lot of time and work!

It'll be a crazy December for me as I finish up my teaching assignments, attempt to squeeze in a few minutes of exercising, prepare for the wedding and also, plan to launch a new series of products in line with the theme I love working around with! Thus, you can expect some new nature inspired, shabby chic and romantic floral pieces coming up soon as well!

My exams are finally over and it's so good to feel unburdened with the need to study 24/7. Besides spending a day walking around the malls just enjoying the freedom of not having to study for the next 2 months before term starts again, I took the chance to jump back into jewelry making this rainy day! It's so good to be able to just sit at my desk and let my mind wander about designs and inspirations and I've some new bird nests in the shop!

I got an early birthday gift from Linus, yay! It's a really chic looking stainless steel edition shuffle and it's even got an engraving of my name on it so now I have my very own personalised ipod shuffle!

He knew I wanted one cos week ago when we were attempting to exercise, I was commenting how boring it was to just sit at the gym and cycle/stride away. And since they didn't allow us to read at the gym, I thought it would be a great idea if I could listen to audio books or sermon as I burn calories. Unfortunately, I didn't have a mp3 player and so he decided to get me one! He says it's my motivation to exercise as well, hehe. So yes, to more exercising I hope! Now all I got to do is look for sermons and audio books!

2-way Convertible Bracelet and Necklace

Here are some new designs that have kept me busy the past few days. As you can see, there's lots of flowers again. ;)

I really love simple and beautiful jewelry and as I was putting these pieces together, I figured they would look really good either way as necklaces or bracelets. I couldn't decide which one to make so I decided to make a 2-in-1!

These have been designed to be worn both ways. Feel like a necklace today, simply attach the chain. Otherwise, remove the chain for a simple bracelet. It's really easy to wear and it's gorgeous as well. Not to mention, great value for money. (Man, do I sound like I'm making a sales pitch or what...)

Petite Garden Charm Necklaces

Just some new necklaces that I've uploaded recently. This design was totally unplanned for. I was just admiring my stash of brass charms and I realised that they looked really lovely in a bunch. Played with some colours and voila! I really love nature-inspired charms and I can't have enough of butterflies and flowers!

These necklaces are really pretty and whimsical. Though there are many lovely charms on it, it's lightweight as the charms are not huge but petite and dainty.

Paper Market, updates and an upcoming giveaway!

I happened to walk past a new scrapbooking shop in town today and it's called Paper market. I don't have a talent for scrapbooking but I love love love the whimsical designs, prints and embellishments that the scrapbooking world offers and I always try to find excuses to get something to use for my jewelry. So today, I bought a couple of beautifully designed sheets and you can see some of the collection here. This paper design called 'Romantique Chic' is my favorite, it's so... shabby chic and dreamy and beautiful.

I don't exactly use these directly in my jewelry, but my excuse for having to buy them is to use these gorgeous papers as backdrops when I photograph my jewelry. My current photography is not that great. I'm trying to find ways to improve my photographs but I have very limited space in my room; I take my photos on a 30cmx20cm space. Recently, I bought some new props (if you can spot them in the latest product photos) and it has helped a bit. I'll do a post on it really soon.

Meanwhile, I've been working on some earrings and have recently uploaded them. There will also be an exciting giveaway coming up really really soon, so do stay tuned and have a wonderful weekend! :)

Jewelry Maker's Lesson #01 with some new product updates

I've been wondering what could possibly be a jewelry maker's worst nightmare. I've only started thinking about it when in the last couple of weeks while making accessories, I drove the edge of my pliers into the cuticle of my thumb. Not once but twice in the same spot. The first time it drew some blood, but the second time pain aside, I just felt plain dumb for making the same mistake twice. Dealing with those tough jump rings can be nasty. And the other thing that happened, a mistake I told myself never to make again, was to leave an open box of jewelry parts and findings on my lap when I was in the midst of making a necklace. I thought it would be convenient, you know, although I did think about the potential consequences and boy, in the middle of making the necklace, I slipped up and accidentally let a bead fall and I jumped to try and catch it, all the while forgetting that I had an open box of jewelry parts and findings on my lap. Alas, not only did I lose the bead to the floor, I had a whole box of small findings (jump rings, headpins, eyepins and you name it) all over my lap and the floor.

Thus, 2 lessons I've learnt thus far as a handmade jewelry artist; never ever battle with that tough jump ring, you'll only get an injured cuticle and never ever leave an open box of jewelry parts/beads/findings on your lap even if you are sure you won't be jumping trying to catch that falling bead because you just might end up doing so. Do you have any jewelry makers' lessons to share? Would love to hear from you! We could save some nail cuticles and vacuuming in the process. ;)

On a separate note, here are two products that I've just uploaded.

The Whimsical Soft and Pretty necklace (in the top row) with my favourite colours in lilac, cream and seafoam. It's so soft and pretty, it's perfect for wearing anytime!

And a chunky bracelet (bottom row) in soft feminine colours. This bracelet is really gorgeous and took me 2-3 nights of work and eye strain. It's chocked full of floral and girly charms! Hope you like them! :)

Rings...

I recently bought a new phone and I was totally clueless as to how to use it. Initially, I thought it'd be better to just get a simple phone and an iTouch for the extra stuff (games, organizer, email etc...). However, there was a really good deal available and thus, I laid my hands on the Nokia E75. But being terrible with gadgets, I left the connection to my data plan running for 2 whole days and I just managed to figure out how to turn the connection off this evening! Thank goodness I didn't chalk up too much data or else the billing would have just hit the roof!

Thought I'd test the phone's camera and came up with a collage of rings that I've worked on in the past but have yet to put up for sale. (P.S. Can you guess which photos were taken with the phone? :) These photos have not been edited!)

As you can already guess, I love working with flower beads and charms and I always enjoy putting them together and forming floral clusters with them. I would love to hear your thoughts on these designs! (P.P.S. Pardon my short stubby fingers...)

Just some thoughts about life...

Jack of all trades, master of none; I try not to write too much about personal stuff on this blog but sometimes I wonder if there are others out there who feel the same. Do you sometimes feel like you want to be so many things and in the end, you aren't really sure who you are?

I love making jewelry and having sales inspires and affirms me to keep doing what I love. Recently, I started (re)picking up a long lost interest in professional make-up artistry. I was very into make-up a few years back but when I switched into the social services line, that interest almost automatically fizzled out because both interests did not seem to match. However, now that the interest has ignited again, I'm seriously considering taking a course in make-up artistry. But I still feel a kind of conflict within.

Wise words from Linus, also my FH; he suggested that I think of ways to combine the various unique interests I have and I could definitely see using beauty make-up and jewelry making skills as a form of therapy in social services. Well, not common but I see the opportunities in it. ;)

Hopefully, I'll be able to combine all the interests I have into something that's meaningful and useful in life. I would love to be able to enjoy what I do as a career and not have to choose one over the other!

Wedding Madness

Sorry for the lack of updates. It's been a crazy week visiting the bridal studios and going through their different packages. I'm not sure if it's like that elsewhere but basically the wedding packages here cover everything from makeup to outfits to photography to flowers and car decorations for one fixed sum! So in a sense, you just pay and let them handle everything.

Initially, we thought it would be easier to settle for one of these packages and let them decide everything for us as it was the common and usual thing to do here in Singapore. And we thought it'd be easier since we'll be having a church solemnization and a dinner after. But... since both my FH and I are so into the handmade community and we want to use our budget wisely, we've decided to do it a little different and source for everything ourselves! Although I'm a little apprehensive going that direction because it's quite against the norm here and also because of the lack of time (5 more months to go!), I'm excited too because it means I can get some stuff I've been eyeing on Etsy for the wedding! (I initially thought I wouldn't be able to since everything would be in the package but now we'll be handling everything ourselves!)

So, a post on lilac and silver (yes, that's the theme) weddings will be coming up soon. I've been busy consolidating and hearting items that has caught my eye and if you have any ideas or inspirations on how to make a wedding smashing and unique, please feel free to share. Would love to hear your ideas or your own experiences! :)

Roses Roses and more Roses

I finally laid my hands on these pretty enamel roses and got to work on them almost immediately. I really like the texture of these roses; they are so soft-looking yet they are strong because of their material.

I've paired them up with different gemstones; the pretty fuschia rose with soothing amazonite beads and the red hot rose with smooth onyx beads.

I love both of the colour combinations and if you asked me to choose, I don't think I can! Both looks are inspired differently, the one above being more European-styled while the one on the right is more of a Shanghai-nese chic look.

P.S. (I've been wondering what I could do with a purple enamel rose, any ideas?)

Vintage-inspired Glass Tile Pendants

I'm a little slow but here am some glass tile pendants that I've made a couple of days back.

The theme is really vintage-inspired and there's pictures of the Eiffel Tower in Paris as well as pictures of children.

I did these some time ago and only put it up for sale recently. Taking pictures of glass tile pendants proved to be a bit challenging due to the reflection. I need to build that lightbox soon.

Packaging - A bazaar kit!

I got these sometime back but haven't had the chance to blog about it. Went for a bazaar recently and got a bazaar kit from Cubid.

It was really great cos I had matching mini cards, earring and hair pin backings and even labels to stick on my ziplock bags and boxes whenever I made a sale. I thought the packaging was really lovely and added professionalism. They also specialise in boxes and you can even customise them for your own business.

P.S. (The guy who started out Cubid is my fiancé so you now know we both have a common love for all things indie and handmade! :))

Flower Power

Here are some new designs that I've been working on. Been thinking of ways to work with those petite and pretty floral vintage inspired cabochons. I realised they went really well with the Czech flowers that I just recently acquired and came up with 2 designs with them (first 4 pictures from the top, left to right). I call them the 'Petite Flower Pendants' because that's just what they are; small, sweet and pretty. These would work wonders with summer frocks and cotton dresses.

The other 2 lovely accessories I was working on can be seen in the last 2 pictures of the bottom row. The Garden Charm Bracelet was a lot of hard hard work. I spent 4 nights wiring and putting the different beads and charms together and the lovely Nancy from Knoxville is now the proud new owner of it! I loved the end result of this bracelet so much that I've started on a pink one! Do keep your ears tuned for its arrival. ;)

And last but not least, these gorgeous Fuschia Red Rose earrings (extreme right, bottom row) were a quick fix when I needed to get creative and I really love how the colours go so well together. Fuschia red roses with faceted Swarovski crystal briolettes in olive green, very pretty!

Some exciting news ahead!

It's been a really long while since I've updated and I must apologize. Work and night school has been crazy and it's been a struggle having to juggle so many things. However, it's always been my passion and desire to start a little craft business from home and so, after much consideration... I've quit my day job to allow more time in designing and crafting jewelry and working from home!

This week will be my last week at work and although it has been a very scary step to take, I am looking forward to this and have been excitedly planning some new designs. Having sold more than 150 pieces of handmade accessories in the past 2 years (as a hobby under another website), it feels like it's time to move on to something more serious with this hobby of mine and perhaps, it's also time for my jewelry styles and designs to evolve as well. I've been experimenting and I realize that I've always been drawn and attracted to garden-themed victorian floral vintage pieces.
